You may remember we just did a blog covering the Fine Art Fairs on MDI, and now it’s the turn of the more local craft fairs. These fairs feature the treasures created by your family, friends and neighbors. Some have a competitive portion, but many are fundraisers for our communities, a chance to meet local crafts people and stock up on gifts or simply treat yourself.

Island Arts Association

IAA holds 3 shows each year (Sneak Peek: there maybe an additional one 2018 on July 4th), Memorial Weekend and Labor Day Weekend they are on the Bar Harbor Village Green and an August event at the Pemetic School Green in Southwest Harbor. These shows help raise funds for YWCA MDI and other community organizations, featuring the work of crafters from Mount Desert Island and the Outer Islands. IAA was created in 1975 to promote individual local crafts people by hosting group shows. All types of crafts are represented and you may well find Worthy Goods pitching a tent here!

MDI Open At Sam Shaw’s Gallery

Since the gallery’s early years in the 1980s, Sam Shaw has displayed the artwork of others on his gallery walls, usually with a kickoff party at the start of each new exhibit. In 2001 the gallery launched the “MDI Open” exhibition explicitly for local artists which runs during May & June. The first and longest show of the summer season, the Open gives resident artists of Mount Desert  a chance to enjoy the gallery’s spotlight. The inclusive vision of Sam Shaw has mentored craftspeople, starting at Shaw Jewelry who now have accomplished jewelry careers of their own such as Lisa Hall.

Bizarre Bazaar

“A fabulous little in-store craft fair”. Every December Spruce and Gussy hosts this event featuring local artisans, a storewide sale, snacks and wine to get you into the Holiday spirit. Just like the store, the line up is ever changing and eclectic. You’ll find Jennifer Booher, Quercus Designs light box photography next to a Floral CSA alongside felted and knit Christmas decorations and even sea salted caramels and chocolate truffles.

MDI Hospital Auxillary Fall Fair & Luncheon

An annual event with proceeds going toward funding for equipment for The MDI Hospital. More than just a craft show, you’ll get lunch, raffles, door prizes, a bake sale, Christmas and Holiday items and White Elephant event! The event is usually held at the Atlantic Oceanside in Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor Barter & Swap Super Sale

Whilst not your traditional craft fair, this is fast becoming quite the thing! Though the name may vary, this annual event is normally in April and organized and operated via the amazing Bar Harbor Barter & Swap Facebook group. Your source for anything and everything, so expect an eclectic mix of art, craft and handicrafts alongside garage sale, rummage sale, over stock and end of line items.

Here’s our 5, but we know there’s more out there, so let us know you favorites….
